Unity and Gnome Shell work slow

Hi guys, couple of days ago I tried to install Gnome Shell on Ubuntu 10.10, and after restart it worked very slow so I removed it. Today I tried Unity and it also work slow. Both of them are working on some wierd time interval, I can hear one sound comming from my HDD and then some instructions are executed, and then after 5-6 seconds it happen again.

I was using ubuntu 11.10 and Unity worked perfectly but in 10.10 I have some problem. Can anyone help me.
