Unable to use GNOME desktop for Mandriva

Hi,

I have Mandriva 2008.0 (free) installed.

During installation, I chose KDE as my desktop manager. Now I want to try GNOME. I installed gdm, gnome-desktop and most of gnome components. But the GNOME option is not coming in the login screen. Also, when I try to log in to a gnome session through console, it does not allow me to do so and fall backs to KDE. What seems to be the problem?

Thanks

you did not have to install gdm....to be able to choose gnome....but can you confirm if your login manager is now gdm or is it still kdm?

assuming it is still kdm....have you clicked on the bottom options to change from the default...which is the last environment....to gnome....or is that option or all options missing from kdm?

I changed my display manager to GDM (previously it was kdm).

Yes, you are right, the GNOME option was and is missing from the Session Type option in the login screen.

Do I have to do some additional stuffs beside changing the display manager from kdm to gdm?

ok did a full test....as I prefer kde and not gnome to make sure I know what I am talking about.

with KDE I selected only 2 packages in MCC...gnome panel & gnome control center.....and mcc auto selects the dependencies which I accepted...about 50 packages....I kept kdm but I can log in to gnome so see if that helps

SMukhuti 05-29-2008 10:27 AM

I'll do as you said and get back.

Thank you. Problem solved. GNOME Panel was not installed. It installed with some other dependent packages and the problem got solved.

Worked for me :)

Thanks aus9 I followed your install list and though most versions on my Mandriva free 2008 were older, (& some missing), it's worked for me. :)
I find KDE difficult to work with. OK a personal thing but I couldn't find any of the recommended methods for setting up keyboard shortcuts that worked for me.

You might want to download a copy of PCLINUX2008 Gnome Live CD. PCLinux is built on Mandriva and is easier to work.

Good Luck, Michael
