unable to access repositories

Hi,

I was using Mint Linux until I wanted to download an image viewer when I was told that the ubuntu repositories could not be accessed.

I later substituted PclinuxOS and tried to download Abiword and a dependency. Once again I was told that the repository at http//: spout.ussg.indiana, etc, could not be accessed.

I'm starting to wonder if there is something amiss with my computer itself. Here's the spec:

Gigabyte GA- M57sli-s4 mobo
Athlon 3800 processor
Nvidia Gforce 8500gt graphics card
Corsair DDR2 2gb memory (twin)
HP1740 flatscreen lcd monitor
WD 400gb Sata HDD

As everything other than the repositories seems to be working okay, including the internet, perhaps its something in the Bios?

I'd really like some help here, please.

Sounds more like you are behind some-kind of proxy server and need to configure proxy globally within Ubuntu.

If that's not the case then at least it's something todo with your network.

Well, I'm now using PclinuxOS which, I think, isn't based on Ubuntu. So I imagine that you are right about something wrong with my network.

Is there any way of testing this?

Are you on a home network or Campus or how is your setup ?

Hi Again,

I'm on a home setup. There's only one computer (specs as given) with a wired router giving me domestic broadband.

I've clicked on Firefox Edit, Preferences, Network and then 'configure how Firefox connects to the Internet'. This shows that I am directly connected to the Internet. I have sculled about the Web and this seems to be the right connection for a single user.

There are options about Proxies here but as I'm not sure what a Proxy is or what it does, I've left them alone.

If all the above seems okay to you, I wonder if my router could be configured slightly wrongly?

Thanks for your reply, by the way.

Is your linux box using dhcp or static ip ? could it be that the linux box does not have the correct dns configured ?
configured in /etc/resolve.conf

I'm not sure what could be causing this but it's probably something very simple, usually is.

Feeding in manual settings worked! Quite why I don't know but I'm very glad you suggested it. I'm now using Abiword very happily, which is what started off this thread in the first place.

I'm very grateful for your help, Uxinn. It's nice that there are obliging people like yourself for people like me to call on.

Best wishes.

my guess would be that the dns server settings in your router is not correct.

glad I was able to help :)
