ubuntu package manger is not able to load GCC !


i do not know what is the problem , but i am not able to load GCC on to my ubuntu loaded desktop , ... it asks for many essential software to beinstalled and even on installing those ( like the srandard libraries etc..) it still shows an error, ... what can be the solution , ..... i like Ubuntu compared to other versios as it is easy to load , but i am not able to do what i loaded Linux for , ie ,.. C progrmaing , ......

what is the exact command you type, and the error message you get?

i tried to add gcc to a older version !

i actually had an older version installed , i ahd got the latest version through post from UBUNTU , so i tried to upload GCC usign the 'install applications' option , it showed something like required software is not installed and thus installation will be terminated !
