add to my last answer....I've recently added ClamTK but I don't know how/if it works. Automatically? Has to be told?
Re-booted? Understanding these contraptions is still a mystery to me.

yes, more or less automatically. You can check if the daemon (/usr/bin/freshclam) is running.

I'm not sure if this is the place for this or not...continuing with my drag and download issues my newest idea is to see if my
problems will be cured by upgrading. I started Ubuntu with 10.04 and each year I'd download the new issue to a disc and load it
following directions and happily go from there. I've never tried to upgrade till now. Googling the how to's is not automatic.
One says do NOT go from 16 to 20. Big chance to lose data. Instead go from 16 to 18, then from 18 to 20. And the procedure is
many steps. Reading tends to sound confusing. Have any of you suggestions? Also some directions use the command line which I am
very poor with. Or am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? Why can't I just click go and it's done?

no, the procedure is quite simple, only a few commands (something like this):
Code:
apt update
apt upgrade
apt dist-upgrade
do-release-upgrade
It is relatively safe, although probably better to save your important data before starting. And/Or create an independent home directory as it was discussed here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...on-4175677013/

I'm baaack..still haven't had any success with my problems. I started with losing folder contents. Then drag and drop. That's how I put items in a folder and now can't. I accept the fact my folder contents are gone. I still think I've picked up a bug.
With every new release I would download it to a disc and with a fresh install and if there was something foreign it would be
gone. But now I don't want to lose my bookmarks and don't want to take a chance. It seems everything I try doesn't work and
things I did before don't work now. I have read not to upgrade to 20.04 directly. Instead upgrade first to 18.04 then upgrade
to 20.04. But I still can't do that until I have a way to save bookmarks. Anybody have a magic cure???

You can usually import/export your bookmarks. Otherwise you can save your important data before upgrade.

In dealing with my issues with my infected(?) 16.04 I've put 18.04 on my other computer and am trying to get accustomed
to it I guess I'll have to live with it. I feel they changed too much too quick. Having said that I have questions on it.
With my other computer I can drag and do some of what the other one lost. Upgrading questions. Previously I've always put
the new one on with a fresh install from a disc. How trustworthy is upgrading? I've seen said to back up first. I haven't
seen "how to" any place. The couple of dozen bookmarks I want to save I don't know if they fit on my 32 gig flash drive.
Also "how to" that. Is upgrade reliable with present data? (bookmarks). Or am I asking too much? I guess I'm afraid to go
ahead and try because I don't know anything about retrieving lost information. I feel I'm at a point of no return. Anyone
have any ideas? Thanks

This post is all over the map. Try break it down to specific problems, work out one at a time until satisfactory results are achieved, mark solved and move on to next one.

Disappearing folders and files may be indicative of hardware failure - have you run any smartctl tests on the hardware?

Answering specific questions posed from responders will help you learn your system better and perhaps reach goal of solving problems.
You haven't really answered anyone so far.

Comment #19 gives you clear and concise directions "how to" upgrade the system from terminal (command line)

Whether or not its trustworthy is irrelevant - if you don't trust Ubuntu, don't use it.

Very doubtful that you've encountered any bug or infection. Do you even run essential maintenance updates for Ubuntu 16.04? or don't you?

If your bookmarks won't fit a 32GB thumb drive, get some more thumb drives... no?

If you are unfamiliar with Linux as to how to determine how much space the Bookmarks will need, and unwilling to do the research (man pages, Wiki's etc), perhaps Linux OS aren't the best option for your computing needs.

Sorry, I would have posted sooner but I was dealing with a password issue. I want to thank cordx, WFV, frankbell, pan64,
ehartman, and uteck for your input regarding my 16.04 issues which seemed to be continually compounding so I bit the bullet
and installed 20.04 from a disc which, of course deleted all the bookmarks I wanted to save. I am now on 20.04.1 and have a
lot to learn. Already I see a couple of things I'll try to figure out if I can. If I can't you'll hear from me again.

i am sorry to hear you lost your bookmarks. sometimes even learning a new version of something i am familiar with can be frustrating, but it sounds like you made a good decision by moving to 20.04.1 since 16.04 doesn't have that much support left. good luck with your search for answers and learning

16.04

I want to thank cordx, WFV, frankbell, pan64, ehartman, and uteck for your input on my 16.04. My issues at the end kept
mounting so I bit the bullet and installed 20.04 from a disc which erased all my bookmarks. Now to start over from scratch.
I even installed the point release for whatever that does. I have noticed a couple of glitches already but I want to wait a
little and see if I can work through it. Rest assured that if I can't I will come calling.
