When you enter your password in a terminal it will look like nothing is happening not even a line of *** so just enter your password and press enter.

Ah I see.

There is the passwd command but that will also require your current password so isn't going to be much help. I've had a quick search and it seems that Ubuntu 14 doesn't come with a GUI to manage users by default. This blog shows how to install a GUI tool to manage users. I haven't actually followed it but the comments are generally positive.

Does your password include decimal digits, perhaps?
If so, then your NumLock LED may be out of sync with its status as seen by the character-mode terminal. You may try and press the NumLock key twice to get them back in sync. (Actually, pressing the key once will bring them in sync, and pressing it once more should change both the LED and the status, and will confirm that they are now in sync again.)
