ubuntu 14.04 - setting won't stay set and other problems

During an update my system crashed, I've managed to get most things working again. But one thing seems to defy everything.

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 and when I log into the desktop everything is reset. If I open the privacy setting and switch off the "get junk from sponsors" switch, close the window and then reopen it the setting has reset. This happens with everything. I can't pin anything to the side bar and many setting are not even visible.

How do I reset the login/desktop?

Wrong permissions?
Code:
sudo chown -R user.user /home/user

No permissions are all ok - one of the first things I checked.

I've also tried

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

and

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

setsid unity

But to no avail. Nothing works.
