Ubuntu 10.4 update no keyboard & mouse

I recently updated from 8.10 to 10.4 by updating to 9.04 & 9.10 first. My problem is, everything seems to be booting normally but once the splash screen loads, it freezes and the keyboard and mouse both stop working. After the splash screen hangs for several minutes, the screen goes black. I am wondering if there is something I can do during the boot sequence to affect the process or if I could do something with a burnt copy of 10.4. Appreciate any help.

Try booting into the Ubuntu Live CD and testing the keyboard and mouse. If they work from the CD, it indicates something is torqued in the install.

If they don't work, test with a Live CD of another distro (Knoppix would be good for this). If the keyboard and mouse still don't work, it's likely hardware.

Try reseating the keyboard and mouse, then try swapping them with known good items one at a time. It's just possible, though highly unlikely, that both of them rolled over and played dead at the same time.

Running a live CD right now. Keyboard and mouse both fine, as they were before the update. So now what do I do about the install?
