Ubuntu 10.04 on Compaq desktop cannot recover from suspend normally

Compaq desktop 500GB HD 2GB ram with 15GB disk allocated to Ubuntu 10.04.Using the shutdown option suspend, computer suspends, screen does black and computer power light blinks. When press computer switch briefly, light goes steady and screen remains dark. Using the sequence: Ctrl+alt+shift+prtscr followed by reisub boot screen is displayed. On selecting Ubuntu 10.04 os the logo immediately appears followed by the normal login screen. This same behavior was true for vsns 9.04 and 9.10

What hardware is it using, though?

I used to have similar problems with resuming from suspend-to-RAM if I had the nVidia drivers installed, but using nv or nouveau it worked OK.

Thymox thank you for your query. I'm not at my Compaq[yr 2004] but I recall it is nvidia gforce2 something. You may be right.
