Trash icon and .local/share/trash not the same

When I double click the trash icon on my desktop (Zorin 7) i see a ton of files that i've deleted from a usb connected drive.

When I go to ~/.local/share/trash and do ls -al I see expunged, files, and info directories. CD into any of those and do ls -al, and there is nothing in them.

How can I find and permanently get rid of the files I'm seeing when I double click the icon?

If you have deleted files from (external) usb drive, most likely there will be a ".Trash$UID" folder in the usb drive itself where $UID is your userid which could be 500 or 1000, 1001 etc.

Open the Trash folder on your Desktop. Click the Edit tab, Select All. All the directories/files should be highlighted. Hit Shift+Delete keys. You should get a pop-up window asking if you want to Delete.
