Transfer files from linux to pc?
 

I would like to know how to transfer files from an old dual boot tower (OpenSuse and Win XP) to the new laptop I got (Win 8.1)
I don't want to copy the files to the usb then pass it to the new pc, to many stuff.

I would like to know how to connect both machines like on the same network so I can pass the files directly.

are both computers connected to your local network ( if you have one )

Note: I do not have a Windows 8 machine for testing this, but this is how it works:

Share a directory on the Windows machine using simple sharing. DO NOT use Windows Homegroup. Homegroup sharing works only with other Windows devices. Make sure you give it permissions that allow others to write to it over the network.

Install Samba client on the Linux machine, if it's not already installed.

Start Samba client on the Linux box.

You should then be able to browse to the Windows share in your file manager and copy files across the network.

Edit: The two machines must be able to see each other in the same subnet for this simple sharing to work. You can test this with the ping command in both Windows and Linux.

You can set up file sharing between XP and Windows 8 or SuSE and Windows 8.

The previous posts were for the later so here is a guide for sharing files between the two versions of windows. If samba is not already set up on SuSE this might be the easier choice. Also you never mentioned what files you were trying to transfer although it really does not matter.

You could also get a crossover cable and try connecting the two machine directly. I'm assuming that the laptop at least has an ethernet port, even though you may not use it normally.

wow, dont make it hard. to go from MS world to Linux world just install FileZilla on the MS computer and transfer files that way. no need to configure and setup SAMBA for something so trivial. to me it sounds like the OP is just wanting to migrate from his old dual boot PC to his new win8 computer. as for moving files between MS and MS, there is a good link above posted by michaelk.
