A similar problem!! I had Ubuntu on a Dell Studio Laptop and it worked great except for one thing. When I would try to wake the computer up, the screen would start growing crazy, blinking from the login to a blank screen and then back again. I would have to force a power down to stop it. This isn't the first time that I've had problems with suspend and sleep. Its happend to me on Fedora systems; possibly on other systems that I can't remember.

Hi, eSelix. Thanks for chiming in.

This morning I had an unsuccessful Suspend. I opened a terminal and entered "cat /var/log/syslog". As you probably would expect, many lines came up, none of which were intelligible to me. However, I decided to Safely Remove my charging mp3 player, which I'd forgotten to do the first time around, and try Suspend again with the terminal already open, so that I'd know (?) that the last thing on the log would be the Suspend attempt. Scrutiny of the new syslog list made me think that the last items still weren't the most informative; for instance, it was a couple of screens from the bottom of the list that I saw a line ending "sleep requested (sleeping: no enabled: yes)". (I'm pretty certain that this reflected the second Suspend attempt, and not the first.) I took a screen shot of that part of the list. Ought I to post that screenshot here?
