SUSE 10.1 editing a large inkscape document during BST/GMT adjustment hour
I didn't notice the time, but was editing a large inkscape (v0.43) document on the kde desktop (4) with only a few other desktop documents open at the time. I noticed the document freeze on me and after several minutes stiffed it by bringing up a console and disposing of the problem with an appropriate kill -15 xxxxx command after finding it with ps.
I restarted Inkscape, made the first of my changes and saved the document before moving on with additional changes. Damned if it didn't freeze on me again and I waited for it to sort itself out. It wasn't happening, I couldn't launch a console or much of anything, but did notice the cursor was happy to be moved around the screen. Shamefully I hit the reset button on the processor and waited while the box restarted and SUSE sorted itself out and replayed the filesystem journal to get back to normal. It was that time that my XYL made a remark about the TV program times being awry because the clocks have just gone back from BST to GMT. I haven't delved in my logs just yet, but expect that if I had walked away and waited for the requisite amount hour to elapse so that the filesystem etc was beyond its high-water-mark, so-to-speak then I think inkscape and everything else might have continued normally without all the prodding I gave it..
Did anyone else experience anything like it or were you all tucked up sensibly in your beds at the time.
The system load was significantly less than normal as I regularly leave open documents littered around the four desktops as I move from working on different projects, mail, Google for supporting information etc and writing reports.
Is this a particular hour in the year that remains ever so slightly problematical?
I only have 1GByte of memory on a Sempron 2000+ box, built as a lowest common denominator system just over a couple of years ago. It is long overdue for replacing with a faster box and SUSE 11.0, but honestly I don't really feel the need for anything other than a larger disk. I occasionally surprise myself when I run df and remember that the complete disk system is only 40GByte. Recent and projected future use of ffmpeg suggests that I need to be thinking about the upgrade or at least a bit more disk acreage.
