Strange thing about Wifi passwords

not sure which forum this goes under, so I'll put it here and let the mods figure it out.

I picked up a small Dell laptop with Windows10 and was setting up Linux on it. I figured I'd set up dual boot for a while to see how it worked.
When I did, the Xubuntu 14.4 installer asked if I wanted to connect to Wifi and *knew my wifi password* . How in the ...heck.. did it know that? I had connected with Windows 10, but wasn't signed in.

How did Xubuntu figure out the Wifi password? Tea leaves? Astronomy?
Anyone know?

Are you certain that it connected to your WiFi and not some nearby unprotected network?
