startx fails - cannot find "X"

Possibly a simple problem for someone this. Ive installed Gentoo and was using gdm ok, i decided id like to install kde too. When i tried to emerge kde (kde-base to start) i had a lot fo blocking xorg packages. So (probably not a good idea in hindsight) i unemerged x11-org. I then successfully emerged kde-base but couldnt startx. So i emerged x11-org again. I tried to run startx and get the following error

xinit: no such file or directory (errono2): no server "X" in path

use the -- option or make sure that /usr/bin is in your path and that "X" is a program or a link to the server for the right type of display. Possible server names include

Xorg X.org Displays

xinit: Server error

Ive updated the /etc/rc.conf file for the kde settings. Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong?

Is X pointing to the X windows server?
Code:
ls -la `which X`
