SSH and CentOs, need help

I have centos and I am tring to remote access it via cygwin and ssh. I cant get to log into it. I even tried setting the allowing root login to yes. and I used ssh root@<ip addy>. Just timed out. What else do I have to do to get linux to allow me to remote acces it via ssh? Then the next thing I plan to try to get the X remote access up and running.

Is port 22 open on your firewall?

Also, make sure you've allowed access in sshd_config if firewall is OK

If you use the gui, I'm pretty sure you'll find firewall options under "security" in one of the menu options in gnome (sorry, I don't often use the gui)
