Special characters with keyboard shortcuts

I want to be able to type special characters with keyboard shortcuts exactly the same way as on Windows, for instance I hit Alt+0225 and I get "á".

The only thing I found is this tutorial that doesn't shows what I want to achieve: http://andrew.triumf.ca/iso8859-1-compose.html Also I want to keep my current keyboard layout.

Any idea?
Thanks.

Have you tried seeing if there is a character pallet available for your distro? I used to run Ubuntu and there was a character pallet similar to the one found on Mac OS X (which is Unix after all).

Thanks, do you know where I can find it out? On both Gnome and KDE...
