Sound problem Ubuntu8.04 kernel 2.6.24-19-386

Sound problem Ubuntu8.04 kernel 2.6.24-19-386 we up graded to this kernel and this enabled us to get a dialup modem working but now there is no sound,Using PC user extreme 8.04 live running from dvd drive has sound I wrote down any files in spantic that relate to sound on the pc user live dvd and these files seem to be in the 2.6.24-19-386. There are lots of people asking the same question on the internet. I have allso read as many posts but none seem to have the answer
