Skype icon hidden/missing from panel

Hello I have this slight problem - skype costs me about 40MB RAM memory and it is no use if I cannot turn it on which is practically imposible without the panel status icon. It has done it twice already. I am using debian and it didn't do that in Ubuntu. What could the cause be?

PS could you suggest an alternative to skype ( i don't think there is one but just in case). By an alternative I mean that I will be able to chat and speak to my skype buddies.

Yes - I get a window called End User License Agreement which hangs and all I can see is empty white space.

oh...well...you probably don't have it installed all the way yet. You need to agree to the license agreement.
