Question Significance of display settings

This mail is about display setting terminologies. I am interested to know the meaning and significance of few screen display settings. Hence, I request you to kindly shed some light on the following questions which I have in mind:

a. What is horizontal frequency and what is its significance?
b. What is vertical frequency and what is its significance?
c. I have heard that few monitors (like IBM E74) have resolution of 1024x768 and 85Hz. What does this 85Hz depict (horizontal/vertical)?
d. I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my Lenovo laptop T400. What should I do to set my screen display settings to 1024x768 and 85Hz resolution? How will I know if my monitor supports 85Hz frequency or not.

Kindly suggest.

(a,b) Suggest Wikipedia and your own research
(c) refresh rate. Suggest research.
(d) Look up the specs for your monitor, specifically its supported resolutions and refresh rates. You will want to keep it at its optimal settings, which you should not have to tinker with on Ubuntu 10.04 to achieve.
