i am a great fan of Gnome right from the very beginning. but some versions of Gnome (or is it nautilus) make all the folders open in separate windows. Unfortunately the Etch system i am using these dayz has got this problem.
is there some place where i can change this option..??
Yes, it's in the Nautilus settings, not farther than that. Open Nautilus (for example open some directory), then open Edit menu, select Settings (the names might not be exact, I'm not using English version of Gnome now so I'm translating them as well as I can remember). Select the Action tab (second from the left, at least here). The radio button selection at the top of ("Action" as well, or something like that in English) allows you to choose if you'd like to open targets (directories, files, ..) with a single or dual click; right below them is a checkbox with a description "Open always in browser window". If that checkbox is selected, one Nautilus browser window is used all the time you open directories, and if it's unchecked (like it probably is in your case), whenever you open a new directory, a new Nautilus window is opened.
