seeking non-browser application for web "radio"
 

I listen to streaming audio for various radio stations.
A typical web-link reads
http://"javascript:Stream('http://ww...am.html')" When I select the web-link, my browser launches a pop-up with the title Streamtheworld Live Player -- station ident.

I have no idea what is going on behind the scenes, (but I'd love for someone to help me find out.)

I'd really like to have some non-browser application -- either GUI or command-line -- that I can launch to start listening to the respective stream.

My goal is to have a schedule-driven playlist:

• time 1 ==> this station
• time 2 ==> next station
• ...
• time N ==> another station

My ultimate goal would be to record the audio in a pod-cast format so that I can listen even if I'm away from my desk.

You'll notice that the Javascript brings up a URL with a Flash app.

For better or worse, most Internet radio sites these days are Flash.

Hopefully, that both answers your question...
... and suggests your next challenge (after accessing the audio stream independent of a web browser).

I suppose that these flash apps use some proprietary protocol between
the desktop and their mothership...

Yes, Flash is a "locked box". I'm not aware of any straightforward way to "grab" the audio - but I have no doubt such means probably exist.

have you checked the source of the flash window there is usually a address embedded in the code.

I guess I need to wget the named web page.

I'll report back whatever I learn.

OK, I'm NOT sure about this, but audio inside a Flash site will probably be in MP3 format. So - if you can get hold of the URL somehow (through a bit of hacking, but I don't know how), you can use XMMS or Totem or whatever to play it.
