Screensavers in KDEconfiguration not visible for user
I have installed openSuse 10.3 last week and from yesteday on I cannot set a screensaver in KDE Configuration.
When I click "screensaver" I get just an empty box and the settinge and test buttonds are grayed out. There is a random screensaver still working but not the one I selected upon install.
There are more people around having a similar problem recently, also on other distro's, but no working solution found so far.
The odd thing is that for root and the other user it is still working, so I guess it must have something to do with changing some settings for the user "Me"
I found an old thread with the hint to check if the screensaver's dir was readable, but cannot find such a problem.
I don't know how it's done in OpenSuse 10.3, but in Suse 9.3 I would right-click on the desktop, select Configure Desktop, select Screensaver, and select the screensaver I want. I did it that way for myself and both of my grandsons without any problems.
Screensavers in KDEconfiguration not visible for user
I know this, since I have been using Suse from version 6 on.
The problem is , as I mentioned in my question, that it is still working for root and another user, as well as for a new made user. Something broke in the KDE environment for the main user.
In the desktop applet there are NO screensavers loaded anymore, so selecting one is impossible.
A random screensaver does still comes up, which is the standard behaviour I guess.
I can't find any clues in the logs and I don't know where to look to restore it.
Something has obviously changed, and the changed condition is probably stored in ~/.kde. You could try renaming that folder then logout/login to start a new one. Copy back ~/.kde/share/applnk, apps, fonts, icons, locale, mimelink, services, servicetypes. Selectively copy back ~/.kde/share/config files, making certain the files you copy back don't have anything to do with screensaver.
You may be able to get rid of the unwanted change that way.
Or, just do it the easy way. Delete ~/.kde, logout/login. You will have to reset all application preferences, of course.
I will try the renaming .kde and then copy the files one by one
Thanks
Did some additional searching and found a solution.
By removing the file ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu and restarting KDE the screensavers were back listed in the Desktop Configuration Utility.
