Screen Resolution issue Debian Lenny
 

I just did a fresh install of Lenny amd64 on an HP Pavilion. I am using an older CRT monitor. When I first started the machine, My desktop was running at 60Hz with 600X800 resolution. I installed the Nvidia GeForce 6 series driver from their site (I have a GeForce go 6150 nForce 430 card). It dropped my resolution to 640x480 @ 50Hz. After unistalling the driver, my refresh rate was back up, but I still only had the choice of 640x480 res. I tried the driver from the repo's next, but that just dropped my refresh rate again. How do I get my display back to 600x800 resolution?

Just try to re-build the xorg.conf, or try to delete it. The new xorg shouldn't need one and should auto-detect everything, if not you will have to do editing:

Install the nvidia drivers, either with module-assistant or through nvidia. You will need to edit your xorg config file I'm betting, or you might be able to force it through the nvidia config program. WARNING if you go past your screens rates you will either get black or ruin the screen. I would make sure you know what resolutions and rates work with your screen before doing any modifying.

if you edit the xorg.conf it shouldn't ruin the screen, xorg just won't post I think? I'm not sure, I don't remember what happened when I had to edit it. but I'm pretty sure it'll crash xorg if the wrong settings are applied

Thanks. I can actually see everything I open now. I wish I could get the accelerated graphics to work. I guess it doesn't matter on a CRT monitor anyway.

Have you tried running "gksu nvidia-settings"? This will allow you to futz with your monitor settings and save xorg.conf when you find the best one. Be sure to save a backup of xorg.conf before you start.
