Screen res does not go above 832x624

I'm running Debian Etch right now. I've tried both KDE and GNOME, the problem is the same on both. (I use KDE primarily).

Right now my resolution is 800x600. This is causing me various problems in KDE, as many windows are cut off. They are too large for the screen, and I cannot click on all the necesarry buttons, especially the "apply" buttons of option windows.

However, when I go to desktop configuration, I cannot go above 832x624. Even that resolution does not work: it only allows a refresh rate of 75Hz, which makes the picture on the monitor very jumpy.

Is this likely just a restriction with the video card, or is there a way to solve this?

I'm not quite sure of how to find information about my video card from KDE. IF someone could help me with that, I could provide more info.

Also, I have another video card I could try. I have tried it before, and when I use it, the system begins to boot, but when it is complete X does not launch, but instead says that there are no visual display devices attached (which is clearly not the case if I can read the message on my monitor that there are no devices attached.)

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks all!

I think the problem would lie in the X configuration file

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Linuxquestions wiki has an article which should help.

You might get answers searching for xorg.conf here at LQ or elsewhere.

What type video card are you using?

What does the "Screen" section of you xorg.conf file look like?
