remote firefox control

I'm having some trouble using

Code:
firefox -remote 'openURL(any/url/here)'

I have a Linux server, and am trying to make it control a Firefox instance on a Mac (using OS X). I am running Firefox from an xterm window and have verified that it is a child process of X11.

And no, I can't just convert all the users to Linux.
