Question about modern Xorg.conf files

Hello,

I just have a general question about the xorg.conf files I see in distros like Ubuntu and Mint. Everything always seems to work automagically for me with these distros (screen resolution, etc), but the xorg.conf doesn't really have anything in it.

It just has a bunch of stuff like "Default Monitor" and "Configured Video Device", but no actual settings like what I remember learning in the xf86config days. There's no mode lines with the resolutions, not even a defined driver.

So for my actual question. Is this something that Xorg does automatically now, or is this something specific to the underlying setup in these distros (Mint, Ubuntu, etc)? If I were to use this same xorg.conf file in something like Arch or Slackware, would it work?

Thanks!

Swill

It should work with any distro, unless they have some sort of helper app that the other distros don't. I have taken xorg.conf files from Debian and used them on Slack before, and had no problems. AFAIK, X pretty much sets everything up to "just work". At least on my systems it has.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've noticed lately. I remember back in the RH9 era, it was much more of a pain to get working on some distros...
