Unhappy Problem with Ubuntu 10.04

Guys, I had Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my system - And to my surpise am not able to use it.
First of all the system freezes, after logging in the system. This happens every time. I had even tried formatting the partition and tried! But luckly it works in Failsafe Gnome Session Mode.
But now my problem is the network icon is not availble in the panel, and I am not able to connect to Internet ;-(
I tried using the Network perferences, but to no avail. It has no option to connect to Internet!
Help me with this problem. And what is that failsafe gnome?

Get a terminal and run dmesg |less. look for errors
Have a look in your logs in /var/log/* , and find out what's complaining
For Xorg.0.log there is a shortcut
grep -e'EE' -e 'WW' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
