Playing audio and video in Konqueror

I've recently just moved from Ubuntu to Kubuntu.

With Kubuntu I'm using konqueror as a web browser and I'm finding it impossible to play audio or video clips.

I can't find anybody who is having the same problems.

There seem to be advice about Netscape? Or Konqueror plugins?

In particular I'd like to play the BBC Radio on demand things (so that's Real Player) and watch video clips.

I've configured the file association for realplayer things to reaplayer 10, but when I press play nothing happens. As opposed to Firefox which will load up Realplayer and play.

All other media types are pretty much lost on me. I've got loads of media players and I'm a bit confused as to what to use for what. Do I just use Real Player for all?

Video clips to, nothing happens. Firefox would load something up and say it was buffering, but nothing happened there either.

I'd really like to keep using Konqueror because everything else about Kubuntu is working so well and I'm finding it a lot better than Windows! But this is annoying me.

What can I do? How can I fix this problem?

Cheers

Konqueror uses the same plugins as Firefox. You need to run Konqueror -> Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> Plugins. Make sure your Firefox plugin directory is listed in the list of directories that Konqueror should search for plugins. Click on scan for plugin and then in the Plugins tab, check to see if your Mozilla plugins are listed.

As for which media player to use, try Kaffeine. It integrates well with Konqueror and the rest of the KDE environment.

Cheers,

Not at home at the moment. But I'll try that when I get home. Atleast I know what I'm looking for.

Nope! That didn't work.

I've included the dir the Realplayer plugin is in and Netscape sees that it is there. It finds nphelix.so and the Mime info says that it is for Real Player media.

I copied nphelix.so to the firefox/plugins directory and firefox plays realmedia audio just fine.

Why doesn't konqueror behave in the same way?

And does anybody know why I can't play movies? Same message, plugin not found. Where can I get these plugins and where do I put them?

I'm am not sure if I made myself clear in my post above. You copy all plugins e.g. flash, realplayer, acrobat etc and put them in the firefox plugins directory of your distro. After that make sure that Konqueror knows where to find Firefox plugins using the directions I posted above and click on scan for plugins. That works perfectly for me and I can play RealPlayer streams from the BBC and other sites.

As for playing movies, do you have the right codecs installed in the apps that you are trying to use e.g. Kaffeine needs win32 codecs if you are using the Xine engine.

I've got all the plugins in the mozilla plugins folder and have scanned them. Netscape claims that they are there, certainly for realplayer.

But when I go to BBC listen again website and click on the play button nothing happens. As opposed to firefox which launches realplayer and then plays the media.

Does anybody know why Konqueror wouldn't launch realplayer. It is associated with the rpm file type in the Konqueror configure tab.

I'm stumped, why is there not an easy way to do this?

Oh and do you do the copying with the terminal or Konqueror, if it's the latter how do you set it to root user?
