Hey guys, I didn't see a separate forum for that distro, so here's my q. I am playing with that distro, didn't see an intaller type, and this box is a tiny box with no CD, so I booted off a flash drive, and did a dd of the image to the internal hard drive. So I have my hda1 (bootable, pendrivelinux) and hda2 (sitting idle).
When I boot, I get the pendrive menu, select persistent (meaning it is supposed to save changes, etc.) but it doesn't seem to be working. I like the distro, but on each restart all changes are gone and I don't see in plain sight where these settings are.
Is anyone around using this distro and have some .02 to throw out?
it would help if you told us the distro name, Damn Small, Puppy Linux, or Slax?
they all have an installer, its just hidden in the menus, or in Slaxs case it is a command
hmmm, pendrivelinux. Let's see, the menu on startup say's, pendrivelinux, the default wallpaper says pendrivelinux, and where did I download it, yep pendrivelinux
E
But, doing some looking around, I do notice the desktop resembles ubuntu and the file that was the actual installer is called Etch_PDL_Compiz_Windows1.1.1.exe Hey, while I did some looking the screensaver came on to a nice debian symbol floating around
Well I have never heard of this distro, and google didn't turn up anything, mind giving me the site where you got this from?
I would suggest you try something like Damn Small which is has alot more documentation
The install is actually nice and clean, a little sluggish on the machine. I have been playing with DSL and DSL-N for a bit, but since I got back into this project I can't seem to make a workable dsl-n (need the dsl-n due to the 2.6 kernel) device. As I said, I am putting the installer to a compact flash drive and booting off that, and both the CD and normal installer keep dumping me out with a can't find KNOPPIX error, so I thought I would look to a distro with a bit more functionality. So I stumbled on the above, saw a linux mint, etc. but these all seem to be only off the flash/usb. DSL at least has a HD-installer built in, but I will look around a bit more.
Actually re-read the link I sent, and there is the optional spot for the 2nd drive setup for saving, etc. so I will look at that as well

Hello Sir-lancealot, I've used the pendrivelinux distro and had absolutely no problems setting up the second partition and saving most of my changes.
One thing to note though is that you must create the second partition... because the first partition is used for the compressed filesystem only. The second partiton is where it will save your changes.
Pendrivelinux.com is well known for their simple tutorials on running Linux portably. The Pendrivelinux distro is based purely on Debian Linux and uses a Gnome desktop environment, that's why it looks and functions much like Ubuntu. I personally like it better.

Help me out if Im wrong people But the dd command takes that image and creates it identical to the other drive I did this with a cdrom image to a flash as a test and you know what the flash worked great but the saving to a cdrom image on a flash drive did not work had to wipe the drive and do a different type of install.

1)-- HOW did you create the 2nd partition? please detail
2)-- Seems you know this distro well, can you detail how to delete the boot-up sound file, or how to stop it from being played?
dude, go to the link you advertised so readilly and read what is written there, it tells you EXACTLY how to make the second partition, boot from the drive, choose the option to load it to RAM run gparted which would be in System>Administration>GParted, unmount the flashdrive, shrink the partition as small as it goes, click apply, once that's done remove your drive from the system, plug it back in, unmount the second partition and format it to ext2, reboot and load the way you have been, i got all this just from reading the tutorial
