Optimize vmware for 3d application performance?

Hello. I use vmware 5.5 to emulate a Windows 2000 guest OS. I run Bryce 3D and trueSpace 5.

Under emulation, the mouse is slow to respond within these applications when moving or positioning objects. If I move an object (click and drag)and then move the mouse another direction, the object still moves in the same direction.

If I slow my hand movements and stop before moving the mouse another direction, the application becomes just about usable. But it's an annoyance; not smooth and fluid as in native hardware.

Here's my system:
Asus A8N32-SLi
Athlon64 3800+ CPU (am contemplating upgrading to Athon64 4800+ dual core)
2GB RAM (2x1gb PC400 modules)
300GB hard drive (SATA)

vmware 5.5
Windows 2000 OS
1GB given to the VM

Mouse settings in guest:
Sample rates, acceleration, and sensitivity set to maximum

Mouse settings on host:
Sample rates, acceleration, and sensitivity set to as maximum as I can tolerate (the mouse can be made barely useful in the 3d app, but in the Linux Host it's waaaaay too fast)

Are there other tweaks I can try, or is a CPU upgrade my best hope?

Thx!

PS: I tried WinXP, and this had no effect.

There is experimental support in VMWare that you can try. Edit the '.vmx' file for your guest, and add:

mks.enable3d = TRUE
svga.vramSize = 67108864

It will be used the next time you start vmware. If it causes problems, just delete the two lines and restart vmware again.

If that's stable and improves your performance enough, you can skip the CPU upgrade. Also, are you running fullscreen (also helps)?

Thanks much for responding!! (I had been using full screen mode... but every google and other searching parameter I tried was fruitless.)

Using those two parameters has sped things up noticably in windowed mode and is about perfect in regular mode. I'll keep playing around, but this has REAL promise.

Thanks!!
