yea that did work but all iv got now is a single strip of text in top left corner, no sound with it, no icons. Id have to figure where all the settings are and how to set it up but it only looks like its a very simple text strip anyhow. Even when set up properly its just https://dunst-project.org/screenshots/

I appreciate the suggestion but i dont think its what i want.

Further searching suggests you should (may?) have an "audio volume" control in the menu somewhere that has a control for "notifications" under "applications". It was broken, but supposedly fixed in 5.8.

On the other hand, I've found posts of the "system sounds keep breaking" type for all versions of KDE 5.

I have got system settings -> multimedia -> audio & volume -> applications -> notification sounds

Its set to 100% and not muted.

Personally from all the reading iv done it sounds a bit of a mess. the way kde has a nice new tray notification daemon but it only work for apps built or updated specifically for kde5 like Kmail & Konversation problem is 80% of my day to day stuff does not

As i say , iv been at this problem before , many times, Im going to give up for now but probably will be back at it when i install the next thing that has notifications and it starts annoying me all over again.

Thx all for all the help and suggestions.
