Unhappy No more flash drive icon! What happened?

Im using Salix and XFCE. All of a sudden I have a permanent File System icon on my desktop called "floppy". It just gives an error message if I click on it.
But. If I insert a CD, DVD or a flash drive, the system seems to respond but does not provide an icon on the desktop, like it used to do.
So I have no way of viewing the files or content of the inserted drive.
Is there any way to fix this? I don't know why it started doing this. Its a mystery!
Thank you. Cheers.

Does
Code:
parted -l
or
Code:
fdisk -l
see it?

after 10+ years you can only use a GUI icon on desktop to open file manager ?

or is Salix "crippleware"

no idea, no real information given

Code:

Thanks for the serious replies. I was trying to keep it short and sweet.

The laptop responds by spinning the disk in the case of a CD/DVD and by displaying the green LED in the case of a flash drive.
The error message I get is
<Failed to mount "floppy" mount: special device /dev/fd0 does not exist>

I will follow this up by posting the results of the suggested commands. No drumroll.
No idea what you refer to as crippleware.

either your OS lacks basic software
or you lack ability

great, now repeat those commands while a CD/DVD is in the drive and the flash drive is plugged in.

This and all other output shows it clearly:
No flash drive has been recognized by the system.
Are you sure one was inserted when you tested?
Is your salix installed to the internal hard drive?

Also interesting:
You said it used to work.
What happened between now and then?
