No GUI For Mandriva Free 2006

Dear Friends,
Kindly help me as Im unable to go to GUI under Mandrive Free 2006 and Im completely a newbie and I've searched a lot abt it on the same forum. Kindly help me.

I've tried these two steps.

man inittab

Change the default runlevel from 3 to 5

Something like
cp inittab inittab.bak
sed s/id:3:initdefault:/id:5:initdefault:/g inittab.bak > inittab

1. Log in as root on the screen.
2. type "runlevel5" and hit Enter.
3. type "startx" and hit Enter.

as suggested by some users to them having the same problem, but it didn't help out.

Waiting for your all help.

runlevel5 is set by me and it shows id:5: etc. when I type startx it shows some fatal error. actually it shows the whole screen but I don't have any screen capture so i cannot show it here.

it says me to check form x.org the latest version of x and says u r not allowed and so many things which I dont remember presently. But what I think is people are installing Mandriva Free 2006 (3CD) and working happily then where's the problem with me?

Now what to do?

I'm currently using Mandriva Linux 2007 (yes, 2007), which works perfectly. I think that either you did something wrong during the install or maybe one of your cd images is corrupted. I would recommend downloading the new version of mandriva free and burning it to cds (or to a dvd) at a low speed (to prevent burning errors).

Dear Friend,
Neither my any CD is corrupted and I have re-installed it twice so there is no chance of mistake. nway what abt Mandriva Free 2007. Is it directly going or booting to GUI no problem persist. If yes then I would try for Mandriva Free 2007. Early answer appreciated.

Thank U
