No Fonts in XGL

I first noticed (and posted) this problem, thinking it was an opengl issue. My problems run much deeper...

Under Xgl, I observe the following:

ryan@linux01:~> xfontsel &
[1] 30348
ryan@linux01:~> Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset

I think this would explain why my apps are having font issues

Any ideas on what to go check next? Seems to be compiz/xgl related, problem wasn't there under a 2D kde desktop on this system.

More info... I have apps with messed up fonts. But, if I push them to a 2D desktop (like to my PC via Reflection X) they work OK !?!?!

This sounds very very much like the problem encountered here:
("font error" posted by Gary Richardson).

I tried tracking down the fix described in that post:
"What I did was edit /etc/TIMEZONE, which is really a link to
/etc/default/init, and changed the occurances of en_US.ISO8859-15 to
en_US.ISO8859-1. Once I rebooted everything worked fine on the system."
But couldn't find the corresponding (Suse 10.1) files.
