Newbie Scientific 3.0.7 X-windows won't run

I had Scientific Linux 3.0.7 (don't know why this version) installed on one of my workstations to run a specific commerical CFD package. All worked well until last Monday when it refused to boot up. It seems to go all the way through to the point where it asks for the login, flashes the nVidia screen for a few seconds and then goes back to the login.
I can start it in the single mode and it seems to run, but I can't get the X-windows to start.

Am I best off to just start over?

Thanks.

No reason to start over.........

Did perhaps a new kernel get recently installed??? If yes, then this is might be your problem. Simply boot into runlevel 3 (not single user or runlevel 1) and run the nVidia installer again, or download and install;
