Need assistance installing TuxGuitar

I need some help installing TuxGuitar.
I extracted it but im not sure what the readme means when it says
Code:

$mv TuxGuitar-* /home/*/install_dir
Any help is appreciated.

gilead 12-29-2006 08:20 PM

The /home/*/install_dir bit refers to where you've installed the software, e.g. /home/steve/tuxguitar. So you've be moving all of the files with names that start with TuxGuitar- to that directory.

im still a litle confused
there are no files that start with tuxguitar
all there is build-linux.xml, build properties, build.xml
and some folders

when i try to do make build
*** No rule to make target `build'. Stop.

gilead 12-29-2006 10:51 PM

OK, I had a look at the archive and they're referring to moving the extracted directory. For example if you downloaded TuxGuitar-0.8-linux-gtk-x86.tar.gz and wanted it under /home/steve/apps, the commands would be:
Code:

$tar -zxf TuxGuitar-0.8-linux-gtk-x86.tar.gz
$mv TuxGuitar-0.8-linux-gtk-x86 /home/steve/apps
$/home/steve/apps/TuxGuitar-0.8-linux-gtk-x86/tuxguitar # The script is tuxguitar, not TuxGuitar

I hope that helps, I haven't tried to run it, just to get the syntax for installing it...

thank you!
after extracting and understand what the readme what telling (due to your help)
i ran in the console
Code:

/home/usr/Tuxguitar/tuxguitar
and the program executed!!!
great
i dont think suse likes "$"
now is there a way i can make an icon to desktop so i dont have to type this everytime?
edit** sometimes linux just ends session randomly any ideas?

The "$" is meant to represent the user command prompt, and is not to be typed in. Also you may come across "#" which means the root prompt.

ah ok. i thought maybe it was something like that.
two new problems arose.
No sound in tuxguitar and since it runs off of java i need to install some java sound stuffs.
Next problem---im trying to install Kguitar (just uses MIDI sound and I installed that through yast) just to see which one is better and i use the configure make and make install commands. configure works but when i do make and make install i get an error
Code:

usr@linux-z5yk:~> su
Password:
linux-z5yk:/home/usr # cd /home/drummond/kguitar-0.5
linux-z5yk:/home/usr/kguitar-0.5 # make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.
linux-z5yk:/home/usr/kguitar-0.5 # make install
make: *** No rule to make target `install'.  Stop.
linux-z5yk:/home/usr/kguitar-0.5 #

still wondering about that end session issue also.

On the TuxGuitar doc page they give the following advice for getting sound working (you'll have to change the paths to those used on your system):
Code:

Make sure, the package javax.sound is correctly implemented on your Java virtual machine. TuxGuitar is written under Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 5.0, if you have installed more than one JVM in your system, you can use one of these environment vars:  JAVA or  JAVA_HOME and run TuxGuitar.

Export JAVA:
$export JAVA=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/bin/java
$/home/user/TuxGuitar-*/TuxGuitar

Export JAVA_HOME:
$export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
$/home/user/TuxGuitar-*/TuxGuitar

I haven't seen KGuitar, but if you're getting a "no makefile found" error, either there was a problem with configure, or you're running make from the wrong directory. Was there any output from the configure script?

ok so i got the deluxe sound set for java and it says just extract to the audio directory which i found. so everything is cool. but i dont have permissions to write or modify. so i go into properties and change the permissions but i still cant move it. hmmm...
ok now on to kguitar, yes when i do ./configure there is an output (its long but at the end there is an error):

Can you give some more info here please? Do you mean you don't have write permissions for the location you want to move the files to? If the location is under your home directory that's unusual. Have you checked that your permissions are OK for the destination directory? Is there a fat32 file system mounted there instead of a native Linux filesystem?

You don't have the required X files for the program to compile against. Someone here who uses Suse can tell you which packages you'll need to install to get the X includes. Once you have those, re-running configure should generate the makefile.

First off, I am not dual booting windows so writing to an ntfs or fat32 is out of the question. No worries on that. My location of the java is not home. it is
Code:

/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update8/jre/lib/audio
ok. I have dont have the write permissions for the location i want to move the file soundbank.gm to the location i gave you.
it says access denied
could not write to ...blah blah locatiom

thanks. it is good to know it is not just me.
im kinda surprised suse didnt install those necessary packages.
but if you go to kguitar's web site http://kguitar.sourceforge.net/req.php
it has requirements and i installed those through yast. so what gives?
oh yeah thanks for all your help.

If you're trying to move the files there as a normal user it won't work. Try using sudo to run the command (e.g. sudo mv /some/file /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update8/jre/lib/audio). Otherwise, you can su to root and then run the command.

About the kguitar requirements, somebody else here (a Suse user) will have to help with the required packages...
