MythTV, Edgy Eft, PVR350, problems!!!!!
 

Hello ,

still a newbie, spend most of his spare time running around after my 2 kids, so when I have a linux issue, I try my best then come here!!!!

Anyway - back to business.

I recently did a clean install of Edgy Eft to give it a go & installed Mythtv to have a crack - wanted to know what all the fuss is about!

I used the guide here:

I chose the frontend/backend/desktop option - wanted to keep all options open.

I installed ubuntu no problem, installed automatix2 to get the nvidia drivers ( & other stuff) working no problem & ivtv drivers for my hauppage pvr350 - all fine. Then came the mytytv install.
No problem downloading etc & basic install, but the problem comes on setting it up.
I ran the command sudo mythtv-setup & couldnt seem to finish it. All seem to go ok until I got to the "Channel Editor" option. When I chose scan for channels, the prog returned the message - error failed to open the card.

I checked on the terminal - please see a paste below of the output.

Any help gratefully received. I hope Ive posted in the right place!!! :newbie:

Im not sure if this will help, but it might point you in the right direction.

Is your card recognised? Run "lspci" to find out.

Have you installed the drivers for your card. See the www.linuxtv.org for more details.

Install Kaffine using aptitude. This will also install some KDE libraries, since it is a KDE app. Stop the mythbackend server, (sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop), and open Kaffine. Kaffine should detect your card, and allow you to watch TV.

If the above step work, then try MythTV again.
Open two terminal windows, and su to your mythtv user in both. In one, run mythbackend. When mythbackend has started, then run mythfrontend in the other. Try scanning for your channels again.

I have a page Here about my experiences setting up mythtv. It is quite specific to my card (Dvico), and to Australia. Obviously, you will need to change the Australian bits to UK, and Dvico bits to your card.

I have installed Kaffeine - it seems not to recognise my card - does the lspci readout confirm this??

It looks like your TV card is recognised - see line 3.

You need to install the drivers - go Here for instructions.

Hello IBall - cheers for the reply. I did install the drivers.From the lspci above, does it look like they are not installed? I am at work at the moment but at home i did a dmesg itvt report - there were no errors there.
There has been an update though - I have managed to get most of the way through the setup (even downloaded channel data hurrah) so I think this problem is sorted. When I get home however, there will be another query. Oh to be less confused!!!!!

your lspci is fine. That just means that edgy sees the device and knows what it is. It does ot mean that it knows how to use it.

you need to fix the IVTV drivers. I recently installed a pvr-350 on edgy with mythtv 0.20 with no problems. The ONLY thing was that I had trouble getting video out from the 350, but I use my nvidia chip for vo anyway.

you should just be able to cut and paste the commands.

Also, pay special attention to dmesg. You will get almost all your info from there.

a better way than installing a bunch of KDE libs with kaffeine is to:

(from the ubuntu IVTV help page)

cat /dev/video0 > /tmp/test_capture.mpg

Let this go for about 5 sec and then press <ctrl> + 'c'

mplayer /tmp/test_capture.mpg

see if there is any TV in the captured mpg.

if not, IVTV is still messed up, report dmesg output here.

I tried to to the test capture but got nothing.

Sorry, I can't help out with that problem. Looking through that output I saw a few references to PAL as being the tv standard. Is that the standard for where you live? Or is it NTSC? I suppose the UK uses PAL, right? If you're trying to use a PAL card to view NTSC stuff you'll have probs and vice versa. I notice specifically the error:

"codec_read: codec 0 is not valid"

which *could* indicate the wrong TV standard. Either way I would take this over to the IVTV guys and see if they can sort it out. You might find it in their mailing list archives: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/ivtv/users/
Or you can bring it up on the list. They would know better than anyone. Good luck!
