So i have the mplayerplug-in. It plays most streams, like these http://www.apple.com/trailers/ and other formats, but not wmv. If i try to watch wmv, firefox just asks what program i want to use to open this. Here is an example stream that does not work:
Hi Kanesoban
Can you tell if you have something related to the .wmv suffix in Firefox about:plugins ?
If not your mplayerplug-in package is not correctly installed.
Do you have these files :
/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.so
/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.xpt
And you have to enable wmp in the ~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf file :
enable-wmp=1
Do you use the latest 3.45 version ?
Just some suggestions about possible causes of your problem.
Greetings.
Do you have these files :
/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.so
/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.xpt
It was just where they are located on an Arch Linux system, but you could have looked where the mplayerplug-in files are installed on your machine, and seeked for the 2 listed above.
The place may vary for different distros.
use:
locate mplayerplug-in*
to find them.
For Windows Media Player streams to play you need these files.
So if you don't have them, you need to somehow get them, probably by recompiling and reinstalling the package, with the configure option to build with Windows Media Support:

I reconfigured and reinstalled the mplayerplug-in, and now it plays SOME wmv streams. But on other sites it just says "connecting to server" and then after a while "stopped" if i try to watch a video, such as this: http://ondemand.video.axelero.hu/mte...das_szeles.wmv
OK there is some progress.
But for now I'm not at home for a couple of days, so I cannot test the stream at the link you gave.
I will look at it when I'm back.
Now do you have the file '~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf' or '/etc/mplayerplug-in.conf' or run 'locate mplayerplug-in*' to see where it could be ?
If yes can you post its content.
I tested the link you gave and I can play it without problem on my Arch Linux machine.
But I don't use mplayerplug-in anymore but the currently under development gecko-mediaplayer which uses the gnome-mplayer front end to mplayer.
See http://dekorte.homeip.net/download/gecko-mediaplayer for more details if you want to use it.
If you choose to use the gecko-mediaplayer plugin, you have to uninstall mplayerplug-in, you cannot use both of them.
What you need to do to play streams in firefox and opera is to be sure that the gecko-mediaplayer files are in the right directory : the plugins directory on your system.
As I don't use Gentoo, I don't know what is exactly this directory for you.
On my machine it is '/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins' and in this directory I have the gecko-mediaplayer files :
gecko-mediaplayer-dvx.so
gecko-mediaplayer-dvx.xpt
gecko-mediaplayer-qt.so
gecko-mediaplayer-qt.xpt
gecko-mediaplayer-rm.so
gecko-mediaplayer-rm.xpt
gecko-mediaplayer-wmp.so
gecko-mediaplayer-wmp.xpt
gecko-mediaplayer.so
gecko-mediaplayer.xpt
You can find all the directories named 'plugins' on your system running :
find / -type d -name plugins
and look where in these directories there are plugins files for firefox and opera.
And after that install gecko-mediaplayer in the right one, if it is not yet the case.
After a restart of firefox look in about:plugins to be sure all the plugins are found.
Take note that the gecko-mediaplayer plugin is under development currently and is not yet in a stable state, but it works correctly for me already.
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins is my plugins directory. But if i give --libdir=/usr/lib, it installs the plugins under /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, and thats not good for me.
I tried installing gecko under somewhere else, and then copying its files in the correct directory. aboutlugins shows now, that there are a bunch of gecko plugins (including wmv plugins), and if i try to watch a wmv stream, gecko player starts. But it always says "Connecting" and never starts playing.
I tried another time the link you gave above and it works for me.
I will give the configuration I have when right clicking the embedded window of the Gecko player and choosing 'Propriétés' (the one with a tools icon) :
Under the General tab
video : xv
audio : alsa
Cache size : 4048
On screen display level : 0
Under the Plugin tab everything is checked.
Do you have the same ?
Can you confirm that you can play that link directly with mplayer ?
Edit: Also try to rename your ~/.mplayer directory to ~/.mplayer.bak
maybe something is not good there.
Playing http://ondemand.video.axelero.hu/mte...v?MSWMExt=.asf.
Resolving ondemand.video.axelero.hu for AF_INET6...
Couldn't resolve name for AF_INET6: ondemand.video.axelero.hu

And writes this message out infinite amount of times.
By the way, gecko dosen't play other streems too (wich mplayerplug-in played).
