Mouse Pointer Freezes

Every couple of weeks, I have a problem with my mouse, working with XFCE 4.8.0.3 on Debian Wheezy 7.6. The mouse pointer icon freezes, the mouse icon can still be moved freely, but further clicks have no effect. Until now, the only remedy was to restart the desktop.
  • At least this time, the icon froze on Drag. I don't remember if that was always the case.
  • I ran x2vnc when the freeze happened, to connect to my notebook's x11vnc. Killing x2vnc has no effect.
  • I ran mplayer, killing it has no effect.

What could cause these freezes. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

would it be safe to assume that the issue is not actually the mouse pointer but the system itself?
something hogging resources?
open a terminal window, type "top" and leave it running and see if something starts using loads of cpu when the freezing happens.

Vnc is probably the culprit, especially if the notebook has 2gigs or less in memory.
