more and different pointer or mouse cursor glyphs for Ubuntu Jaunty
I have tried several ways to install and configure more or different cursor glyphs for use as mouse or pointer cursors. No joy.
Can anyone guide my journey out of darkness and into the light, or colored or larger or high-contrast or animated? Not Cursored, ~~~ 0;-\ Dan |
maybe you can tell in a short way what you've already tried (and thus didn't work).....
Then we can give you suggestions / things that really can help - not a dialog of: "already tried ... already tried ..........." :D Or, if you already solved it yourself, explain here for other users with potential the same problem how to do it... |
Thanks for the nudge ... no solution, yet.
First, I went to System==>Preferences==>Mouse and was sad to find that there is no way to set or otherwise alter pointer (mouse or stylus) cursors or glyphs. I had a similarly unproductive experience trying System==>Preferences==>Appearance. Lastly, my attempts to Google (v.t.) "mouse cursor" with other words like "change" "replace" "install" returned several results that discussed various problem areas, but nothing about replacement cursor or glyph themes or even individual cursors or glyphs. Eventually, I found this http://linuxinside.blogspot.com/2007...se-cursor.html but could not make these instructions work from the beginning. Specifically, the Preferences dialog does not have a Pointers tab at all. I have a folder .icons (leading dot) but it is empty. What the ...? ~~~ 0;-/ Dan |
one more question...
are you in KDE or Gnome??? (or ...?) |
... back among the living
After some time in hospital and other distractions, I get to return to my "real life" as a geek...
I want to solve this problem with GNOME on Ubuntu Jaunty and Lucid. 1. I need link(s) to pointer-icon artwork collections 2. Download and install instructions -- put them onto my system so that they can be used by any user 3. Activation and integration instructions -- arrange for specific user to experience the new and different pointer artwork. I suspect that my trouble begins with lack of knowledge about what to search for -- what are mouse-cursor or pointer-cursor artwork items called? Are they "pointer icons" or something else? Are they part of various "icon sets" that I find or are these cursor items separate? Thanks, ~~~ 0;-Dan |
I think you can find here what you want:
gnome-look An example: ComixCursors => this one states that there's a file called "install" in the archive, in which you can find the instructions to install the mouse theme.... I would think it's the same for most packages :hattip: Success (and if you don't understand it after reading this, ask it!) |
I'm still trying to discover whether mouse-pointer graphics are part of the various "icon" download sets or not. Also, what are they called in real life "mouse pointer graphics" "cursors" other?
Merci d'avance ~~~ 0;-Dan |
what is going wrong?

Install Theme Nothing Happened!! There was a small indication that the install button got pressed, but there was zero other "happening." I restarted X11 and still I did not get a different cursor set. Try some different mouse cursors to install - if that doesn't work, let it know here!

"themes" and "icons". 2. Using System --> Preferences --> Mouse I do not find any way to alter the mouse pointers. 3. When I install gcursors to Jaunty or Lucid, nothing happens when I select an alternate cursor and select "install". 4. I find the following already installed: Code:
/path/# ls /etc/X11/cursors/ Thoroughly stumped, ~~~ 0;-Dan |
I'm not a Gnome user (have been it for +/- 2 months), so I think I can't try to help you any further...
Maybe someone who knows Gnome better than me.... |
