Missing sliders in Pulse Audio Volume Control. Debian Sid, XFCE (and Gnome).

I have googled this but can't find any reference to it. Recently an update has meant the volume sliders have gone from pavucontrol meaning that it no longer allows me to control the volume of anything.
Sadly I don't know which update broke this as I hadn't call to look at it for a couple of days.
I know Gonme was temporarily removed and I have been able to install it again but that doesn't help and, indeed, the sliders are missing in Gnome as they are in XFCE.
Has anybody else seen or, even better, fixed this? I seem to recall a theme chooser which allowed one to choose things like slider type but I can't find that either, does anyone know what that may be called?

Sound is working fine, with the volumes I set previously being remembered and displayed and any applications appearing in the volume controls. I just have no sliders with which to change the volume. It's very odd.

Thanks, ALSA Mixer is working fine, as it Pulse Audio, I'm just missing sliders in the GUI.

I think this could be as simple as changing a theme or installing one that's gone missing but Gnome seems to have changed the way it handles themes and the theme dialogue I could find isn't the one I recall which showed what things like sliders will look like.

I am having this exact same issue. Did anyone ever get a cause for the effect?

I find that the mate-volume-control does work and that in combination with the Pulse Audio one for switching outputs does result in things being fairly manageable.
Sadly I've not found the cause or solution for this though.

I'm on Debian Sid Xfce, and have not seen the issue. Mine works fine, just checked it again. I've been updating daily, occasionally more often, and did again today. I have no idea what could be causing your issue. I can say that I've never had Gnome installed on this system, though. I abandoned it when V3 bombed me.

Yes, I see errors, but nothing which seems to be anything but a warning:

This is what makes me think it might be a theme issue to do with Gnome but I have tried various Gnome themes with no success.

Maybe make backup of your ~/.config/gtk-3.0 directory, then delete it. Logout and login and try start pavucontrol

I renamed gtk-3.0 to old_gtk-3.0 and gtk-2.0 to old_gtk-2.0, restarted ofr good measure, then ran pavucontrol with the same results. Oddly neither directory has been recreated.

gtk2.0 is not the problem (it doesn't use gtk.css), it's a gtk3 theme issue.
I haven't more idea sorry, maybe download a gtk3 theme you like from:
http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=167

Install it in your ~/.config/gtk-3.0 dir, and see if it works

Or maybe install Debian sid gtk3 theme packages:
https://packages.debian.org/search?s...s=gtk3+engines

It was gtk+2.0 for me.

Code:
sudo apt-get install gtk+2.0
Fixed it for me. It turns out when I removed the initial kernel that came with deb autoremove took gtk2.0 out as well.... Hope this helps....
