Mint driver platter fix

Will appreciate help to recover platter data in hard dive that was running Linux Mint, being the only operational system on the laptop. The faulty hard dive was removed and a new hard drive was installed so the computer would function. Plan to recover data from the faulty platter in hard drive as follow; 1. Turn laptop to “ON”. 2. Attach a SATA to USB jumper cable into faulty hard dive SATA port. 3. Place Attach SATA to USB jumper cable into laptop’s USB port. Do not know how the laptop will react after step 3. Questions; 1. Does the platter data recovery require a program to be installed on computer. 2. Conditions before computer became non operational; Screen’s pointer arrow became slow in response to mouse movements, then a clicking noise sounded in laptop, then silence and pointer arrow remain fixed; no respond from mouse movement.

Plugging removed drives into USB like that is quite common. If it is readable and mounts, just copy the data elsewhere. Your bigger issue is that "clicking" noise - if it's really broken, probably nothing you can do.
If the driveis recognised try running smartctl over it to see what errors are logged.

Clicking is a mechanical problem which could be due to the head actuator failing, spindle motor failure or maybe the heads crashed and agree that data recovery is probably not possible.

Assuming the drive electronics still function the laptop should recognize that a USB drive was connected but probably have many errors when it tries to mount and read data from the device.

In the past sometimes cooling the drive in the freezer placed in a plastic bag would be enough to get the drive working long enough to recover data but doubt that trick still works.
