Mint 16 Mate; Mint menu periodically disappears from the panel

Mint 16 Mate; Mint menu periodically disappears from the left side of panel and I have to put mint menu on the right side of menu to shut down.
Thing is when I boot after a shutdown Mint menu is back in place left side of panel til the next time it disappears. Never really got an install that wasn't flaky in some way.
Somehow the hard drive was partitioned for eUFI and has a 512 mb DOS partition on the front of the hard disk. I don't do windoze! I recently did a clean install and was told I had partition issues that would make my disk unusable if I selected something and or eUFI so I avoided chosing it. The DOS part must have been with the previous install. Looks like if I want to be rid of eUFI I'll have to wipe the drive with zeros and be careful not to repeat selecting eufi. I suppose that only time to choose it is at install cuz BiOS has nothing in menu for changing it after the fact. I have the Knoppix live cd ready for the operation.
Brain hurts just thinking about doing it!!! any and all input appreciated.

Maybe this will hep you: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/333 or maybe this: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...thout-a-reboot. Mint panels in Cinamon and Mate are buggy. I experienced that my self playing with them. The best solution for me was to reset and stop messing with them. As for your harddisk bad sectors, if you had that you wold not be able to install linux mint, becouse the install software detects your hard disk error. So it's more likely for you to play with your panel configuration, or you installed something that messed up your panels, in this case a simply reset it would be enough

I advise you to update to Mint 17 since Mint 16 is obsolete and no longer maintained and supported. The repository for Mint 16 is also closed so you won't get any updates for Mint 16.

Mint 17 is a Long Term Support (LTS) version which will be supported and maintained up and till april 2019. More info on how to upgrade can be found here: http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=143&t=173378.
