minimize applications to desktop icon or screenshots

I've been looking all day and I can't seem to find anything other than backstep(http://backstep.sourceforge.net), which doesn't quite do what I want it to do and won't compile for some odd reason. What I want is an application like miniMIZE (http://aquaria.za.net/content/view/133/32/) which essentially skips a taskbar and adds a screenshot of a minimized program to the desktop. Backstep adds an icon (which is fine - still what I want, just not as pretty), but when I try to compile it it fails with
Code:
configure: error: Package requirements (xcomposite >= 1.0 xfixes xdamage xrender) were not met.
Checking the Arch site though, I find that I am up to date on all of those packages. Anyone have any other suggestions on applications or why it's failing?

You could try rox as an alternative file manager and desktop. It has the ability to minimize open apps to icons. Poke around in the options when you have the panel set up.

Configure isn't perfect

Sometime issues with configure are causing you problems. Especially if you have installed newer versions or one that is slightly different in features than an expected dependency. For example, using a Nvidia driver instead of Nouveau can cause some configs to get testy about libraries provided by those packages. The libs are there, but the configure script is not able to deal with the alternate install. If configure fails, but I'm sure I have the right version or higher; I edit the configure script to skip the failing check; so I can compile. I find if programs link they will usually work when I have this issue, but I test a bit more carefully to make sure. I'm always on edge when linking a X program because video drivers often have there own versions of some X libraries, X extensions or Xserver. It may be necessary to closely examine linkage to make sure all the libraries are from the same source if the program won't run.
