Media players won't open/crash Mint 17.2

Hi Folks

Hope I got the right section.I'm having an issue where any media player I try to open crashes as soon as it opens.VLC is an exception, will explain.

VLC will open but will only play the audio when playing any video file.If I run a video in VLC from the terminal,I get the following:

"VLC media player 2.1.6 Rincewind (revision 2.1.6-0-gea01d28)
[0x8997910] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.

Fontconfig warning: FcPattern object size does not accept value "0"
Fontconfig warning: FcPattern object size does not accept value "0"
[0xafa40350] main vout display error: Failed to resize display"

The Totem movie player won't open at all.I run "totem %U" in the terminal,I get:

"intel_do_flush_locked failed: Input/output error"

Theses issues will usually correct themselves after a couple of reboots, but will happen again.Lot's of searching but no real help so far.

Thanks

Mint 17.2 Mate
32 bit

I had the same problem with VLC. (audio but no video)

-Go to tools> preferences> video
-Check the box that says Accelerated video output. And just to the right of that box make sure that X11 video output (xcb) is selected.
-Save the changes and restart VLC.

Worked for me.-;)

That's been done. But, like I say,it pretty much anything to do with video.I left this out of the orginal post because I uninstalled wine but,the skyrim launcher had the same problem.Could not actually play the game, just needed it to load up so I could tweak my xbox 360 savegame with the pc version's console.

I'm starting to think it's an issue with the Intel GM965 chipset my laptop uses.

Maybe look in system settings> driver manager> and see if the driver for your graphics card could be updated that way.

I looked on the Intel website and couldn't find an answer on what driver is for Linux.
The closest I came was this link.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/pro...Chipset-Family

Drivers are listed in the output of the command lsmod but determining which driver the kernel is using for your card is not my area of expertise. Sorry.
If anything I'm guessing that the kernel is using the fglrx driver but I could be wrong.

If I find anything in the Mint Forum I'll post it for you.

Maybe other members running Mint will chime in and help.

Just an idea you might need to make a xorg.conf file.

Before you installed your Linux Mint did you check the integrity of the .iso?

MST246 10-10-2015 06:54 PM

Sorry for the noobness here, how should I check the iso.

Open your terminal and type:
Code:

md5sum (exact name of the mint iso linuxmint-17.2-mate-32bit.iso) and hit Enter.
Without the brackets-

If the signature of the .iso in the terminal doesn't match the signature on the Linux Mint page where you downloaded Mint 'Mate' than the .iso is corrupt.

See the long number on this page?
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=191

If the terminal doesn't return the exact number than it can't be trusted.

MST246 10-10-2015 09:12 PM

No match on the 32 bit iso

Match on the 64 bit iso

Looks like I'm re-downloading 32 bit.

I had the 64 bit installed at one time, but uninstalled it because wine can't run 32 bit programs on 64 bit linux,I think, does that sound right?

Yes, that's correct about Wine not being able to run 32 bit programs on a 64 bit machine.

I was suspicious that the LM 32 bit was corrupt because the Driver MGR gave you a blank window.
That should not of happened.

-::-Make sure you download the right .iso because Mint comes with Mate w/o codecs. You don't want that.-::-
Install only for your computers architecture.
If your not sure what your computers architecture is run this and post it for me.
Code:

cat /proc/cpuinfo
If the lm_flag is present your machine is 64 bit-:)

Is it a Sony Vaio?

It's an 8 year old Gateway MT6916
Have to jump back over to Win 7 partition and check some things there, but am pretty sure it's 64 bit capable. Also have heard that all Core 2 duo's can do 64 bit.like I said,I had 64 bit Mint installed.
Is there an "lm" at the end of this line,or am I looking in the wrong place.

flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe nx lm

I was looking for what looks like:
Code:

_lm cmp
for conformation. But yes there is an 'lm' at the end of the flags that are listed.
When lm is present the machine is 64 bit.

That's great that your old Gateway is still running!
