Loading on an older laptop

I have an older Compaq Presario 1600 XL-145

Ubuntu wont completely install on it. I load it, after approx. 25 minutes, I get a desktop with 2 icons: one is "Examples" the other, "Install". I click open on the Install icon ..... it chugs .... I hear the CD-ROM working overtime ...... 1 hour into it, still nothing.

Any suggestions?

Has it been upgraded from the original? If not you aren't going to have much luck with a 'fully featured' distro like Ubuntu. Something like DSL or Puppy would be a much better option, and even they wouldn't be too snappy on 64mb of RAM.

The max that system is reported to be able to handle is 192MB of RAM, not enough for Ubuntu, maybe Xubuntu if you are lucky.

The 500Mhz PIII isn't a huge issue, with enough RAM and a light distro like DSL it would be relatively usable.
