Little help unziping a file

Sorry for asking this... but you might get an idea how newbie I am in this linux stuff. Ok, my question is... how do I unzip a file. I have a file called something.zip and I have no idea how to unzip it, so... I'll receive any help. By the way, I am using Red Hat 7.2

Hi,

Officially you should use unzip with the zip extension, but it could be a renamed file. If unzip does not work try gunzip (both are probably installed by default).

How they work?

unzip <file.zip>
gunzip <file.zip>

It is common practise to tar a bunch of files and zip the archive.

If you end up with a file that has the .tar extension after unzipping, you need to untar the file as well.

tar xf file.tar to untar the file.

Hope this helps.
