LINUX-PAM corrupted my UBUNTU client (not server)

I installed LINUX-PAM, now my computer will not boot to login. It hangs at the boot prompt. I can get to recover root prompt. I need help restoring my OS by removing linux-pam.

thank you for this. this was the trick to get me passed the login. however, I gutted out the install so much that by the time I did this I had other issues that forced me to backup my data and reinstall. nevertheless, this was it, and I am adding it to my tool-box. thanks!
