linux on a iMac
 

I have installed CAElinux, a particular version of ubuntu(v 9.04) on an iMac dualbooting with rEFIt. No problems with general working. But I am not getting sound, only dumb movies. Unmuting I have tried from alsamixer, but it is not responding. I think my sound card supposed to be intel-HDA is not properly recognized. It is showing to be Realtek. Quite often i find this problem in many distros even today. Can anyone give clear directions how to go about it?

Can you show us your outpot of:

#lspci


By the way, you should try with Ubuntu, it might work.

It is quite possible your card is intel but the chip is realtek.

Try running alsaconf (if you havent already).

Go to a terminal and run:
Set the volume to the levels that you desire and ten press "ESC".

Then run:
Don't know if that's the exact problem but is worth a shot.

Log out and log in again, or reboot, as you wish.

CAELinux is only a derivative of ubuntu except for CAD softwares spiced up.

Do make sure the audio group is listed.

If the audio group is not listed, you just need to add yourself to the audio group with If your in the audio group and you still have no sound you should make sure the snd-hda-intel module is loaded.
You might also need the snd-hda-codec-realtek module.
